Wiigwas Elder and Senior Care – The Home with a Heart

Wiigwas Elder and Senior Care is a non-profit long-term care home located in Kenora, Ontario, created by Ogimaawabiitong Kenora Chiefs Advisory to provide compassionate, culturally safe, and holistic care to Elders and seniors from across the region. From its roots in acquiring Birchwood Terrace in 2021, Wiigwas has grown into an All Nations care home, open and accessible to all, grounded in the Anishinaabe value of caring for Elders with dignity, respect, and love.

Wiigwas proudly lives up to its name as “The Home with a Heart.” It is a place where residents experience personalized care, connection to culture, and a true sense of belonging. With daily life centered around warmth, togetherness, and wellness, the home embraces both modern care and traditional healing.

Looking to the future, Wiigwas is continuing the design phase on a state-of-the-art, 160-bed facility on a newly acquired site at 1060 Lakeview Drive in Kenora, on Treaty 3 Territory. The new Wiigwas home will be co-located with the future All Nations Hospital, forming a dynamic and healing campus of care.

The design of the new Wiigwas is inspired by community talking circles and Elder guidance, and will include ceremonial and cultural spaces, medicine gardens, sacred fires, and direct connection to nibi (water) and nature. Every element—from room orientation to outdoor paths—honours the land, promotes accessibility, and fosters spiritual wellness. Whether it’s smudging, storytelling, or simply enjoying the outdoors, residents will feel supported in all aspects of their well-being.

Your support helps us ensure that Elders and seniors in Kenora and surrounding communities live in comfort, safety, and cultural pride. Please join us in building a stronger, more caring future—one where every Elder is treated like family.
